The EU and social inclusion
Many groups of people in the European Union suffer from social exclusion, and for different reasons. This extends to employment where some people find it difficult to get a job. Groups of people can experience social exclusion for many reasons: because they have a physical disability which causes others to doubt their capacities, or because they have health problems that need daily attention. As an example of exclusion, people with disabilities represent one in six of the working age population in the EU, yet only 40% of disabled people have jobs. Promoting the full integration and participation of disadvantaged groups of people is a key element of EU policies – and not just employment policies. Read more on the EU website. |

Senegal fortifies flour and edible oils
The West African country of Senegal became the 59th country to require flour fortification when it mandated that iron and folic acid be added to wheat flour. The country also set standards for adding vitamin A to vegetable oils, and it promotes the use of iodized salt as part of its strategy to combat nutrient deficiencies. In Senegal, during a West African Training of Trainers, millers, public health and regulatory staff discussed the various technical aspects of fortification and harmonization of procedures. The training was part of the Smarter Futures project in which IF participates. More information about food and flour fortification in Senegal is available on the FFI website. |

Primary prevention in Flanders, Belgium
In the Belgian region Flanders an estimated 120 children are born each year with neural tube defects. Scientific research shows that if a woman takes 0,4 mg of Folic Acid every day at least one month before she becomes pregnant and for 3 months during her pregnancy, she reduces the risk of having a baby with Spina Bifida or another neural tube defect by as much as 70%. So far there have been no Flemish prevention campaigns to ensure that women of childbearing age use the proper amount of folic acid in time. Parlementarian Tom Dehaene asked the Flemish Minister for Welfare, Public Health and Family, Jo Vandeurzen, about his plans. The minister acknowledges the importance of prevention initiatives and will investigate possible cooperation with the Ministry of Education with the aim to provide information to students. |

Defying disability
Carol Wanjira, 20, was born with Spina Bifida. Two decades ago, her father walked out on the family because of her disability. Today she is independent and takes care of her grandparents, proving him wrong against all odds. She performs household chores, prepares meals and does the laundry. Every week she catches a bus to town from Kawangware for wheelchair basketball training sessions. She is also a member of the Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Association of Kenya, SHAK, a support group within the IF project at Bethany Kids. Carol was one of the adult speakers at IF's African Workshop 2009 in Kenya. Read her story in the Daily Nation. |
