iPATH program
The iPATH program consists of 2 phases:
Phase 1: fellowship training phase in International Training Centre Mbale (Uganda)
1. Intensive hands-on instructions of selected fellow by Dr Warf (Mbale, 2 weeks), including:
- phase 1 : fellowship training phase in International Training Centre Mbale (Uganda)
- phase 2 : home institution becomes iPATH site
Phase 1: fellowship training phase in International Training Centre Mbale (Uganda)
1. Intensive hands-on instructions of selected fellow by Dr Warf (Mbale, 2 weeks), including:
- Lectures on hydrocephalus, ventricular anatomy, ETV/CPC techniques and outcomes
- Hands-on workshop to learn equipment and setup as well as practicing flexible endoscope manipulation in a simulator model (in cooperation with Karl Storz Co)
- Live operations performed with Dr. Warf on a minimum of 20 cases selected and reserved in advance
- Review and conclusions
- Live operations performed with Dr Mugamba on an additional 80 children
- Review and conclusions
- Introduction and training for patient database
- Discussion of plan for continued communication and support
Phase 2: home institution becomes iPATH site
- Set up and training visit Dr Warf to iPath site (1 week) Onsite setup of equipment (Karl Storz, 1 week)
- Selection operating theatre staff (by selected site)
- Training operating theatre staff by technical advisor; instruction nursing staff on proper care of instruments and correct setup of units (Karl Storz)
- Installation and training for patient database
- Selection local hydrocephalus/spina bifida nurse coordinator (by selected site)
- Training local hydrocephalus/spina bifida nurse coordinator (IF, 2 weeks)
- Set up cooperation with local partners involved in patient and parent education and follow up (selected site, other organizations and NGO's, IF)
- Development parent support groups (IF, 2 weeks)
- Development public education package (IF)
- Development prevention package (IF, Dr Warf)
- Evaluation phase neurosurgery (1 week, after 1 year)
- Evaluation phase nurse training (1 week, after 1 year)
